Significant detail Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Significant detail - Essay Example The narrator describes her routine with Jorg, how he would order them food and watch television with her, and then â€Å"leave the house again,† and how she would be in bed by the time he gets back (page 22). From this we get the sense that the narrator has fallen into her familiar pattern of pretending nothing that happens is actually happening to her. She describes her life from a distance, as if she is a character in a movie. However, one day while doing this she sees some scissors on a desk and decides to act. The scissors are described in great detail, and in a very strange manner as well. Not only are they â€Å"long† and â€Å"narrow†, but there are â€Å"two angular little men† standing atop the blades (page 22). The narrator then becomes suddenly unsure of who she is sleeping with, describing him not as Jorg but as â€Å"a man whose name was probably Jorg† (page 22). She is starting to lose track of reality, and cannot be certain of anything any more. But this scene gets even stranger, as the narrator decides to kill Jorg. She holds the scissors on top of her â€Å"in the dark† so he cant see them, and he â€Å"flung himself on top of me and the scissors pierced his flesh† (page 23). The matter of fact way the mans death is described is very disturbing. And the details are quite graphic, as she describes feeling the scissors pop through his spine and out of the flesh on his back, and how â€Å"his eyes swelled and popped† (page 23). But probably the strongest part of this episode, and the thing which makes it so important in understanding the narrator and how she relates to the world around her, is how she describes her feelings after what is essentially a murder, even if it is an understandable murder because of how Jorg kidnapped her. As the mans corpse falls next to her in the bed, she felt â€Å"as if there might be peace in the room for a while† (page 23). While peace is a good thing, the narrator feels like the only way she can get

Atmosphere Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Atmosphere - Essay Example Firstly, the sense gives people the opportunity of knowing the designation of all their body parts and the activities they can facilitate. They also know the way the body parts move, their effectiveness and how to act in response to stimuli. The process is actualized through sensation and perception that facilitates processing of sensory data and interpretation to give credible meaning. The brain processes the information taken by the eyes and the body produces reflex actions as well as coordinated movements to respond to the external stimuli in a way that makes it the most convenient for the body to move in the given space and the challenges contained therein. Therefore, the elements greatly influence the direction of movement in space. Atmosphere has a direct as well as indirect influence on body movement. For example, while an individual enclosed in a closet or a lift has very little room to shift from one place to another and thus cannot make significant movements even if the ind ividual desires so; an individual hiding underneath a tree holding onto its trunk chooses not to make significant movements while an earthquake is happening in an attempt to keep safe and not catch significant harm. The difference between the two examples is that in the former, atmosphere places direct restrictions on the movement of the body whereas in the latter, external stimuli and factors contained in the atmosphere indirectly restrict the movement of the body. The restraints in the first example are mechanical or physical whereas those in the second example are abstract and a result of the interplay of the mind and body of the individual in the scenario. The relationship between atmosphere and body movement can be elaborated with the help of another example; an individual may see an object from a distance through light reflection and develop interest in acquiring it personally.

Would Tesco Be Successful - Essay Example Smith P.R. and Chaffey D. have argued that E-commerce is commonly thought to include e-tailing, online banking and shopping – it involves transactions where buyers buy and shoppers actually shop. Others suggest e-commerce is any transaction such as a support or an online catalogue search (Smith, Chaffey, 2002). Tesco’s history has shown that the dynamic vision of its bosses combined with the creative and innovative approach in strategy and market planning would pay off in spades. Initially, Tesco with its ‘Pile it high and sell it cheap’ motto, was able to strengthen its market position considerably. The aggressive market strategy, based on acquisition, further took the total number of stores to more than 600 in 1960s and thanks to Cohen, the largest supermarket of Europe came into being in 1961 in Leicester. 1970s and 1980s saw the rapid decline of Tesco primarily because of the low quality product. But under the dynamic leadership of Lord MacLaurin, Tesco underwent tremendous change. His business acumen was so sharp that he had realized early that introducing technology and building committed customer base would accelerate the growth of Tesco manifold. He introduced technology in the two main areas of sales and distribution and at the same time, made special efforts to attract the upper class by opening superstores with high end products. MacLaurin made many changes in the basic format of the store by not only introducing a whole lot of new products lines including non food items, clothes, home appliances, electronic goods etc. but stores in new formats like Tesco superstore, Tesco Metro, Tesco Express, Tesco Extra were also opened to meet all segment of the society. Tesco superstores were characterised by huge space and were designed to attract customers of all strata. It was followed by an intensive drive to make committed customers as members through clubcard so that they could offer their customer extra benefits.

But what people do not know is that war leaves a mark not only to the soldiers’ body but also to their sanity. Soldiers may be trained to be killing machines but the violent experiences that they encounter during the war can have detrimental effects on them which include post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.
